BOARD OF ZONING APPEALS

The Board of Zoning Appeals is authorized by Chapter 155.  Members are appointed by the County Council and are district appointments.

Membership

The board consists of five members and an alternate member appointed by the County Council. Each member shall be appointed to represent one of the five Council districts. The alternate member shall not be a member of the Planning Commission.

Term

3 years

Meetings

Monthly on the Thursday of the third full week of each month. Special meetings called as needed

Stipend

$100 per meeting

Duties

The Board of Zoning Appeals hears and decides appeals where it is alleged there is any error in any zoning order, requirement, decision, or determination. It also interprets district boundaries on official zoning maps. Upon appeal, in specific cases, the Board may authorize such variances as will not be contrary to the public interest where, owing to special conditions, a literal enforcement would result in unnecessary hardship or practical difficulty
