Salary Range: $19.55/hr – $28.32/hr

Job Summary
The purpose of this job is to be a senior level mechanic with the public works department. Performs skilled work in the repair and modification of diesel, electric and gas-powered equipment, heavy and light trucks, and automobiles. This position may also repair equipment at other locations.

Primary Responsibilities:
• Performs preventative maintenance on all motorized and heavy equipment.
• Tests and services various types of motorized and heavy equipment such as lubricate, change oil, fuels, greases and cleans parts and performs multiple other automotive services.
• Diagnoses and repairs mechanical defects on pickup trucks, dump trucks, tractors, motor graders, bulldozers, cars, and other various types of motorized equipment.
• Cleans and cares for tools, equipment, and shop facilities.
• Road tests equipment and vehicles.
• Performs routine welding tasks.
• Notifies required staff of needed parts, supplies, etc. in a timely manner as to not interrupt the operations of the department.
• Maintains all required records and makes reports.
• Follow are County, State and Federal laws and rules as required.
• Performs all work in a safe and responsible manner.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience/Qualifications
• High school diploma or GED and an Associate’s Degree in Automotive or Diesel Technology or similar and/or Vocational/Technical Certified, such as ASE, with three years of related experience required; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge skills and abilities for this job.
• Heavy equipment operations and/or maintenance experience of same preferred.
• Able to use of hand and power tools.
• Welding experience.
• Possession of a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License required.

Physical Requirements:
• Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. This position requires- climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, hearing, seeing
and repetitive motion.
• Must be able to exert over fifty pounds of force occasionally, or up to thirty pounds force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels with those for heavy work.
• Must be able to endure high heat conditions and sub-freezing temperatures. Must be able to work in tight and closed spaces for extended periods of time.
• Clear vision and hearing, including the ability to communicate effectively in various environments.
• Comfortable working in both indoor and outdoor settings, exposed to varying weather conditions.

Other:
• May be required to work on religious holidays
• May be required to be “on call” as situations arise
• Regular and predictable attendance is required
• Must work cooperatively with others
• When position requires vehicle operation, responsible for the safety, readiness and operation of the vehicle and must abide by Dorchester’s safe driving policy
