MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN I

Salary Range ( $16.92 – $22.20)
Purpose:
The purpose of this job is to repair and maintain electrical equipment and install new electrical systems as required. Some plumbing, welding and HVAC work may be required.
Job Essential Functions
• Repairs malfunctions of equipment, lights, power receptacles, and other electrical equipment or systems. Performs weekly inspections of all mechanical tunnels to detect evidence of problems or security violations.
• Reports all violations of building security immediately to the Chief of Security or the ranking officer on duty. Reports all mechanical problems to the ranking Officer on Duty and the Warden. Advises Correctional Officers prior to performing maintenance in the secure area of the Facility.
• Assists with maintaining quarterly inventory records of tools and equipment is responsible for the security of the same. Responsible for the security of the keys and tools located in the maintenance department.
• Assist performing a daily check of main equipment room to detect evidence of problems and all other equipment as designated by the Warden, Correctional Staff and/or Maintenance Tech II. Detects evidence of problems, pilferage, misuse, and provides maintenance or preventive maintenance where necessary.
• Controls the maintenance and security of the maintenance shop and equipment rooms.
• Performs basic maintenance and repair of equipment in the HVAC system of the Department of Corrections. Perform weekly maintenance on sewage lift station.
• Follow directions assigned by Maintenance Tech II as pertains working with the detainee maintenance workers.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Qualifications
• High school diploma or GED, Vocational or technical training preferred with one year of electrical, plumbing, or general maintenance experience required; or any equivalent combination of education training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge skills and abilities for this job.
• Knowledge with electrical, plumbing and HVAC best practices.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.
• Possess a high level of confidentiality and security data.
Physical and Environmental Demands
• Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including tools, ladders, two-way radio, van, and telephones. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials.
• This position requires: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motion.
• Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those of medium work.

• May be required to work on religious holidays
• May be required to be “on call” as situations arise
• Regular and predictable attendance is required
• Must work cooperatively with others
• When position requires vehicle operation, responsible for the safety, readiness and operation of the vehicle and must abide by Dorchester’s safe driving policy
