EMS Paramedic Shift Supervisor

Salary Range: $26.71/hr – $42.28/hr
Job Summary and Essential Functions
The Shift Supervisor is to work within the scope of established federal, state, county and departmental regulations, procedures, and rules. Responsibilities include providing emergency medical care and evaluation to patients, train and develop EMT’s and Paramedics, ensure equipment is in good working condition, ensures vehicle maintenance is conducted timely and efficiently, manages supply inventories, performs administrative tasks, participates in quality improvement initiatives, provides education, coordinates activities of staff and facilitates communication between staff and upper management.
Essential Job Functions
• Must possess a valid National Registered and Maryland Certified Emergency Paramedic certificate.
• Responds to calls and performs the highest level of emergency medical care for sick, injured and/or recovering people.
• Assesses people’s condition and determine what treatment, if any, is necessary.
• Supervises and recommends patient care during emergencies to determine appropriate course of action.
• Provides basic and advanced life support, to include but not limited to, airway management, oxygen administration, use of the automatic defibrillator, IV monitoring, bleeding control, bandaging, shock management, fracture management, spinal immobilization, patient movement and patient care with prescribed medications (those authorized by Maryland State protocol).
• Operates emergency vehicles in accordance with County and State laws.
• Schedules assigned EMT’s and Paramedics.
• Reviews shift EMEDS reports for compliance (mileage, signatures, medical record #) by end of shift and resolve discrepancies.
• Monitors completion of station duties.
• Verifies unit checks in Operative IQ.
• Assists in coordination of public events.
• Assists with all training exercises to maintain compliance.
• Reviews performance infractions with departmental manager.
• Maintains all certifications as required by the County and State.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Education/Qualifications/Certifications
• Minimum of five consecutive years as Paramedic II (Full-time) with Dorchester County or ten or more years’ experience as Paramedic II with another agency.
• Must be a National Registered and State of Maryland licensed Paramedic.
• Cleared by the Medical Director to actively practice.
• Advanced Airways trained.
• Incident Command Certified 100, 200, 700, 800.
• Incident Command Certified 300, 400 required or commitment to acquire within first year as Shift Supervisor.
• MFRI Hazard Material Operations Certification.
• MFRI ACLS Certified.
• MFRI PALS and/or PEPP Certified.
• MFRI BTLS certified (preferred).
• MFRI Fire Fighter I (preferred).
• Current Healthcare Provider cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
• Successfully complete Precept Training Process as applicable (maximum training not to exceed 6 months).
• Familiarity with Image Trend and Operative IQ.
• ALADTEC or similar scheduling software trained.
• Excellent communication and people skills
• Excellent leadership and mentoring skills
• Ability to navigate stakeholder relationships in life threatening situations.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license valid with no more than three points is required.
• Must be at least 18 years old.
Additionally, 1 of the 4 listed positions or commitment to acquire 1 of the 4 within first year as Shift Supervisor:
1. QA Officer
2. Cardiac Arrest (CARES) Coordinator
3. Infection Control Coordinator
4. Inventory Supply Coordinator
Physical requirements and working environment
• Must be able to use body members to work, move and/or carry objects, people and/or materials. This position requires- climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motion.• Must be able to exert over one hundred pounds of force occasionally, and or up to fifty pounds force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels with those for very heavy work.
• Capable of ascending/descending stairs and work in pedestrian areas as needed.
• Must be able to endure high heat conditions and sub-freezing temperatures.
• Must be able to work in tight and closed spaces for extended periods of time.
• Must be able to work in situations of low visibility and under stressful conditions.
• Clear vision and hearing, including the ability to communicate effectively in various environments, required.
• Comfortable working in both indoor and outdoor settings, exposed to varying weather conditions.
Other:
• Will be required to work on religious holidays.
• Regular and predictable attendance is required.
• Must work cooperatively with others.
• When position requires vehicle operation, responsible for the safety, readiness and operation of the vehicle and must abide by Dorchester’s safe driving policy.
