Expressions of Interest

The Dorchester County Council is currently accepting expressions of interest from Dorchester County residents who would like to serve as the County representative on the Chesapeake College Board of Trustees.

Member Term – 5 years
Compensation – each member of the Board serves without compensation but is entitled to reimbursement for expenses in accordance with applicable travel regulations

Duties of the Board of Trustees:

• Establish policy and strategic direction
• Approve academic programs
• Appoint and evaluate President; set compensation
• Approve appointment, promotion and termination of faculty and senior administrators
• Approval annual College budget
• Set tuition and fee rates
• Purchase, lease, or acquire real property
• Approve contracts over $50,000
• Monitor and evaluate institutional effectiveness

Role of the Trustee:

Be engaged
o Share individual perspectives and opinions within the Board; publicly support the College and President
o Attend all board meetings; arrive on time and prepared for meetings
o Serve on at least one Board Committee and attend meetings
o Advocate for the College at local, state and federal level
o Bring needs of community to the College
o Participate in College activities
o Support the work of the Chesapeake College Foundation

o Governance and Human Resources
o Programs, Planning and Outreach
o Foundation

Be ethical and responsible in all conduct
o Follow the Trustee Code of Ethics
o Comply with all requirements of Maryland’s Public Ethics Law
o Work with fellow board members in a spirit of harmony, cooperation and civility even when there are differences of opinion
o Avoid all conflicts of interests or appearances of conflicts of interests
o Be a good steward of public funds
o Serve the Public Good

Follow best practices in governance:
o Respect the role of the Board Chair
o Act as a unit, speak through a designated representative
o Engage in ongoing Board development activities
o Encourage, support, and participate in periodic Board evaluation
o Establish clear Board goals
o Work as a team with the President; respect and support the President’s management responsibilities
